Field Systems Engineer

This is an EXEMPT position and does not qualify you for overtime pay.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Systems Engineer will be responsible for advancing sales of technical products by coordinating with Regional Account Managers (RAMs) to jointly or independently call on new and existing customers.  This role is a technical selling position and will apply principles of solution selling: determine customer needs, execute technical presentations, propose appropriate products and Professional Services solutions, and provide configurations to Walker customers and RAMs.  FSE will also deliver network architecture, design, implementation, demonstration and training.  This will include Service Provider oriented Routing and Switching network architecture design and network operations training.  Duties will include:

  • Establish a customer calling plan with the guidance of the VP and Regional Sales Directors, to accompany RAMS into strategic accounts.
  • Provide technical presentations into strategic accounts to position Walker manufacture partners that best fit their applications.
  • Provide Bill of Materials (BOM) and configurations for projects in coordination with RAMs.
  • Work with appropriate Walker OEM Development Manager on application/product/customer support needs.
  • Provide pertinent data from sales calls to Engineering and/or Operations Departments if Professional Services quotations are needed.
  • Target focus market accounts, assist in business development and revenue generation activities through Purchase Order (PO) receipt from customer.
  • Track and Forecast projects in funnel on month-to-month basis.  Maintain accurate probability scaling and project definition throughout the funnel cycle.
  • Support sales growth of networking projects, multi-manufacturer and next-generation solutions to the sales and profit level defined in the company Sales Operating Plan (SOP) on an annual basis.
  • Represent Walker in a highly professional manger, always supporting our core values.
  • Maintain current certification levels with assigned manufacturers.  Request additional trainings from Marketing as needed.
  • Provide feedback to Sales and Marketing Management personnel pertaining to important industry trends.
  • Provide training for Sales and Marketing Departments as needed.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to Operations Department on networking product installation, provisioning, and test and turn-up as required.  Perform these functions as required from time to time.
  • Enter call reports into our Customer Relationship Manager (CRM) on a weekly basis.  Information needs to be specific and action item oriented.
  • Submit expense reports on a weekly basis.
  • Overnight travel required; some trips will be reactive to customer need and therefore on a quick notice.
  • Exhibit teamwork, personal development and positive attitude.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Four-year degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Three to Five years telecommunications sales or engineering support experience.
  • Service Provider Network Design Engineering, Operations or Craft experience.
  • Five Years Networking product experience and the following certifications:
    • Brocade – BCNE, BCNP
    • Juniper – JNCIS-SP, JNCIS-ENT, JNCIS-SEC
    • Cisco – CCNA, CCNP
  • Knowledge of broadband networks including Ethernet switching and routing, Optical Transport WDM solutions, Managed Services and Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model.
  • Efficient Time Management.
  • Excellent communication skills needed.
  • Use of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Word.
  • Strong, effective presentation skills preferred.
